Women at Work and Home: New Technologies and Labor among Minority Women in Seelampur

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of a globally acclaimed Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) initiative on minority women and work in the “resettlement colony” of Seelampur, located on the border of India’s capital city of Delhi. Based on sustained ethnographic research, the article argues that there is a divide between the promise associated with computer literacy and the reality of participation in the organized labor force for young women.  Further, women’s work at home in Seelampur and as part of the emerging service industry in India should be understood in the larger context of the global and sexual division of labor
