Abstract

In the Middle Ages, many people believed that rocks and minerals possessed magical properties. For example, rubies were used to treat disorders of the blood, while topaz was used to ward off demons. This paper describes the supposed properties of these stones and their uses as medicine, as good luck charms and protective amulets, and as a means of working magic.
