CALL FOR PAPERS - 11TH EDITION OF WHR!

The Waterloo Historical Review (WHR) is back! After a long hiatus, we are excited to relaunch our student-led academic journal, which is committed to fostering intellectual engagement within the UWaterloo History community. WHR provides a platform for students to showcase their work, contribute to historical discourse, and gain experience in scholarly publishing. We are now accepting submissions for our upcoming 12th Edition.

We seek high-quality, original research papers, scholarly articles, case studies, literature reviews, and book reviews that contribute to new and unique historical scholarship. We particularly encourage submissions featuring primary research and innovative historical analysis from undergraduate students and graduate students alike!

Submission Guidelines:

We welcome submissions on any historical topic, including but not limited to:

  • Political, social, and cultural histories
  • Historiography and historical methodology
  • Transnational and global histories
  • Public history and memory studies
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to history

Submissions should follow the latest Chicago Style of Citation. Manuscripts are to be submitted as Word documents (.doc or .docx). Details on submission categories and criteria are below!

Professors and TAs:

We encourage professors and Tas to recommend outstanding student papers for publication! If you have students whose work demonstrates exceptional historical research and analysis, we invite you to submit the title of the work and the student's email, and we will contact the student directly to have their paper considered.

How to Submit:

Please email all submissions to uwhistoricalreview@gmail.com by the deadline below with the subject line "WHR Submission [Your Name]." with the paper attached as .doc or .docx.

SUBMISSIONS DUE: MAY 30th, 2025

Submission Categories and Criteria Original Research Papers
  • Length: 10-20 pages
  • Encouraged Approaches: Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies are welcome. Papers should identify a historical problem, review relevant literature, describe research methods, present findings, and discuss implications.
Scholarly Articles
  • Length: 8-15 pages
  • Encouraged Approaches:
    • Critical Scholarship – Works engaging with critical theory, postcolonial studies, feminist history, or other interdisciplinary approaches.
    • Position Papers – Analytical essays identifying historical issues and proposing interpretations or solutions supported by scholarly research.
    • Case Studies – In-depth examinations of historical events, figures, or developments, discussing their broader significance.
Literature Reviews
  • Length: 10-15 pages
  • Encouraged Approaches: Qualitative and quantitative analyses of historiography, methodological debates, or thematic studies.
Book Reviews
  • Length: 500-750 words
  • Encouraged Approaches: Reviews should include an assessment of the book’s contribution to the field, its strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations for scholars and students.
Style Guide

Submissions to the Waterloo Historical Review must follow the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition), using the Notes and Bibliography system (footnotes) for citations. All submissions are subject to a peer-review process to ensure academic quality.
