Submission Process
What to know before I submit an article?
Suitability
Please ensure that your article topic is within the scope of JUHR (our Journal only publishes content that is relevant for human health). Moreover, please be familiar with the types of articles our Journal accepts (original research, literature reviews, opinion, news/views, abstracts, infographics, and interviews). Each type of article may have different formatting and permission requirements. For more information on formatting, please consult the JUHR Official Manual.
Permissions
Undergraduate students studying at the University of Waterloo (from any faculty) are eligible to submit an article to JUHR. However, please ensure that you have obtained the required permissions before submitting an article to our Journal. For example, you may wish to submit an article written for a course you completed. To do so, you must obtain permission from the course instructor. Permission forms are also required for original research, interviews, and video presentations, which can be found in the Appendix of the JUHR Official Manual.
Deadlines
You may submit your articles at any time throughout the year. However, if you wish to have your article showcased for a particular issue (Fall or Winter), please follow the deadlines listed for each term. For the JUHR Winter issue (2021), the deadline for submissions is October 19th.

What happens after I submit my article?
Your submitted article will undergo the peer-review and publication process. In short, peer review refers to the process by which your work is reviewed by other scholars (student experts in our case). Understandably, having your work placed under the scrutiny of others may seem frightening. However, the peer-review process is necessary to assess the quality of an article and to ensure its suitability with our Journal. The peer-review process at JUHR is described below.
Within two days of receipt, Senior Editors make initial evaluations regarding the quality of an article. If the submission is deemed acceptable by the Senior Editors, the article will be reviewed by a further team (i.e., 2 to 3) of Editors. The first round of editing is expected to take approximately 7 days. After the first round of revisions has been completed, you will be notified regarding the status of your submission (conditional acceptance versus rejection). Upon conditional acceptance, you will be asked to revise (according to editor’s comments) and re-submit to the journal. Following re-submission, the article will be passed through a second round of editing, which is expected to take no more than 5 days. The process of editing, revising, and re-submission will continue until the article is polished and deemed acceptable for publication. In general, only two rounds of revisions are necessary before an article is considered ready for publication.
